Freikirche Lemheim, mitten in Deutschland: Im Kindergottesdienst ernten selbst die schrägsten Beiträge Applaus, nur Uljas Vortrag über Sternkunde wird abgewürgt. Dabei hat die zwölfjährige Nachwuchswissenschaftlerin gerade ihren ersten Asteroiden entdeckt. Insbesondere für Uljas russlanddeutsche Großmutter lassen sich göttliche Schöpfung und Wissenschaft nicht vereinbaren. Kurzerhand entsorgt sie das technische Equipment ihrer Enkelin. Wütend haut Ulja mit Mitschüler Henk, der noch nicht ahnt, wohin die Reise geht, aber umso mehr Ahnung von Autos hat, im Leichenwagen von Familie Funk Richtung Weißrussland ab. Hier soll bald ihr Asteroid einschlagen. Eine skurrile Verfolgungsjagd beginnt, auf deren bunt ausstaffierten Stationen schon länger schwelende Konflikte in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Auf Abwegen entlarven sich Moralapostel als Scheinheilige und entzweite Familien, Freund*innen, Liebende und Länder finden zueinander.

A children’s service at a chapel in the German heartland. Though even the weirdest presentations are met with applause, Ulja’s astronomy lecture gets cut off. But the 12-year-old future scientist has just discovered her first asteroid! Unwilling to reconcile divine providence and science, Ulja’s Russia German grandmother unceremoniously disposes of her granddaughter’s technical equipment. An angry Ulja sets out with schoolmate Henk in the family’s hearse for Belarus, where her asteroid is supposed to impact soon. A quirky chase begins, with colourful stops along the way which highlight long-smouldering conflicts and make them appear in a new light. On their winding journey, moralisers are exposed as hypocrites and divided families, friends, lovers and nations are reunited.

an interview with the director of „La Mif“ The cinema is slowly filling up and the joyful voices of the crowd are giving me a feeling I haven't felt for a long time in the last months of lockdown. Finally it is possible again to celebrate a Berlinale film together. The film team of La Mif is welcomed with loud applause when they arrive at the cinema. Everyone of the crew - the director Fred Baillif, a few of the actresses and family and friends - is smiling and radiates pure joy as they’re walking up to the photo wall.
