Nelly sieht die Dinge auf ihre Weise. Was andere gruselt, stört sie nicht. Monster im Keller? Ein Grund erst recht diesen Ort zu erkunden. Keine Freund*innen? Damit kann Nelly leben. Als Nelly in der verwinkelten Villa ihres Onkels Hannibal herumstöbert, entdeckt sie unverhofft das Geheimnis ihrer Familie: Als Teil eines internationalen Netzwerks von Monsteragent*innen sorgt diese seit Jahrzehnten für ein gefahrloses Zusammenleben von Menschen, Zombies, Vampiren und anderen schaurigen Kreaturen. Nelly will nun auch Monster jagen und wirbelt einiges an Staub und Spinnweben auf. Aber wer sorgt hier eigentlich wirklich für Angst und Schrecken? In dem Fantasyfilm, der auf der gleichnamigen Buchreihe von Martin Widmark basiert, entpuppt sich der Druck zur Anpassung als der eigentliche Grusel.

Nelly has her own special way of seeing things. Where others are spooked, she remains unfazed. Monsters in the basement? One more reason to check the place out! No friends? Nelly will cope. Snooping around in Uncle Hannibal’s labyrinthine mansion, Nelly stumbles upon an incredible secret: her family has been keeping the peace between humans, zombies, vampires and other gruesome creatures for decades, as members of an international brigade of monster agents. Nelly wants to hunt monsters too, and proceeds to stir up a fair amount of dust. But what if she has been misled about who is actually responsible for fear and scariness? In this fantasy film, based on Martin Widmark’s book series of the same name, the pressure to conform is revealed as the true source of horror.

Ein Mensch, der sehr in sich gekehrt wirkt, sich nicht anfassen lässt und kaum mit der Außenwelt kommunizieren kann. Das ist das Bild, das viele Menschen von Autist*innen haben. Aber Autismus ist deutlich vielfältiger. Deshalb wird heute meist der Begriff Autismus-Spektrum-Störung verwendet. Denn Autismus erstreckt sich von geistiger Behinderung und kaum ausgeprägter Sprache bis hin zu Hochbegabung mit voll entwickelter Sprache. Ein Hauptmerkmal sind Auffälligkeiten in der sozialen Interaktion und Kommunikation. Aber wie äußert sich die genau? Für Andere wirkt es häufig als ob Autist*innen in ihrer eignen Welt leben: zurückgezogen, schweigsam, wenig Kontaktverhalten. Aber es gibt auch Autist*innen, die distanzlos und eigenartig in ihrem Kontaktverhalten wirken.
