Zart und zerbrechlich, als wäre sie aus Glas, wirkt die sechsjährige Ema. Nun soll sie eingeschult werden, aber auf ihre Autismus-Diagnose reagieren viele Schulen mit Ablehnung. Nur die Lehrerinnen einer kleinen Dorfschule am Paraná-Fluss sind bereit, sie zu unterrichten. Für Emas Familie aus der Großstadt beginnt nun ein Leben auf dem Land. Die Nähe zur Natur, das unvoreingenommene Umfeld und das Zusammensein mit der Stute Estrellita verändern Ema. Vor allem der feinfühligen Irene gelingt es, ihre neue Mitschülerin auf ihre eigene Art mehr an der Welt teilhaben zu lassen. Der Film basiert auf der Familiengeschichte der Regisseurin Betania Cappato, die ebenso zärtlich wie scharfsichtig auf die Gefühlswelt ihrer jungen Protagonistin blickt und behutsam von deren Wandel erzählt.

There is a delicateness and fragility to her, as if she were made of glass. Now, at age six, Ema has to start school – yet most schools are unwilling to accept a pupil diagnosed on the autism spectrum. The only ones prepared to teach her are the staff of a small rural school on the Paraná River. For Ema‘s family, this means leaving the city behind to start a new life in the country. Being close to nature and spending time with a mare called Estrellita help Ema take some small but important steps. Thanks to the unprejudiced local community and above all the gentle friendship of her classmate Irena, she becomes increasingly able to participate in the world around her, in her very own way. Based on the director‘s own family history, Betania Cappato‘s film astutely and tenderly chronicles its young protagonist‘s inner journey.

an interview with the director of „La Mif“ The cinema is slowly filling up and the joyful voices of the crowd are giving me a feeling I haven't felt for a long time in the last months of lockdown. Finally it is possible again to celebrate a Berlinale film together. The film team of La Mif is welcomed with loud applause when they arrive at the cinema. Everyone of the crew - the director Fred Baillif, a few of the actresses and family and friends - is smiling and radiates pure joy as they’re walking up to the photo wall. Autismus – mehr als nur ein Klischee!

Ein Mensch, der sehr in sich gekehrt wirkt, sich nicht anfassen lässt und kaum mit der Außenwelt kommunizieren kann. Das ist das Bild, das viele Menschen von Autist*innen haben. Aber Autismus ist deutlich vielfältiger. Deshalb wird heute meist der Begriff Autismus-Spektrum-Störung verwendet. Denn Autismus erstreckt sich von geistiger Behinderung und kaum ausgeprägter Sprache bis hin zu Hochbegabung mit voll entwickelter Sprache. Ein Hauptmerkmal sind Auffälligkeiten in der sozialen Interaktion und Kommunikation. Aber wie äußert sich die genau? Für Andere wirkt es häufig als ob Autist*innen in ihrer eignen Welt leben: zurückgezogen, schweigsam, wenig Kontaktverhalten. Aber es gibt auch Autist*innen, die distanzlos und eigenartig in ihrem Kontaktverhalten wirken. So reden einige Autist*innen sehr viel und weitschweifig über ihre Interessen und achten dabei wenig auf die Angemessenheit oder Wirkung ihres Verhaltens.
